Introduction
I love yoga. Really, really love it. But here’s the truth – I don’t love every yoga class I’ve ever taken. And that’s exactly why I’m writing this post today.
The Common Misconception
Oh, yoga isn’t for me. I tried it once…’ Sound familiar? It’s a phrase I hear all too often, and it breaks my heart a little each time. Because here’s the thing – saying you don’t like yoga after one class is like saying you don’t like music after hearing one song.
The Teacher Experience
In my journey through countless yoga classes, I’ve experienced the full spectrum. I’ve been in classes that left me feeling:
- Safe, supported, and challenged
- Mentally and physically invigorated
- Spiritually connected and emotionally balanced
- Perfectly aligned and professionally guided
Conversely, I’ve also experienced classes where I:
- Felt unsafe or uncertain
- Questioned the teacher’s knowledge
- Sensed a lack of preparation
- Missed that crucial teacher-student connection – even though I couldn’t quite put my finger on why!
The Beautiful Subjectivity
Here’s the magical thing about yoga – it’s deeply personal. A teacher who doesn’t resonate with me might be exactly what you need. And let me be completely honest – I might not be the right teacher for you. As a teacher myself, I’ve had students come to my class, try another teacher’s class elsewhere, and never return to mine. And you know what? That’s absolutely perfect.
In yoga, we practice non-attachment (or at least try to!), and this extends to the teacher-student relationship as well. When students find their perfect teacher match elsewhere, I celebrate that. It brings me joy knowing they’ve found the guide who can give them exactly what they need in their practice. This isn’t about ego or competition – it’s about you finding your path in yoga, whoever guides you along it.
The Multi Teacher Approach
Consider this revolutionary idea: You don’t need to limit yourself to one teacher. In fact, I encourage you to find several:
- One who challenges you physically
- Another who nurtures your spiritual growth
- Someone who helps you process emotions
- A teacher who opens your eyes to energy work – and whatever else it is that you are looking for!
What we are looking to find?
There’s this indescribable moment in Savasana, when you’re lying there after a perfectly balanced class, in a well-held space, experiencing pure bliss. That’s what I want everyone to find. It’s why I’ll always encourage people to try again, with different teachers, until they find their yoga home.

Yoga is a direct experience, unique to each person. The benefits and rewards are there for everyone – it’s just about finding your right guide. So if your first (or second, or third) yoga experience wasn’t what you hoped for, don’t give up. Your perfect teacher is out there, ready to help you discover the transformative power of yoga.
